Hiring an SEO expert can be a daunting task, in my experience as a Head of SEO I’ve had my fair share of terrible hiring experiences. So today we’re going to cover 4 main ideas that will help you find the right person to grow your website.

The first suggestion I give is to make sure that we’re at least familiar with the SEO basics to know what we’re looking for in an SEO. The more knowledge we have the better and smoother the hiring process will go. I’ve had plenty of experiences working with managers/business owners who didn’t know what was happening and had seriously unrealistic expectations.

Next, we want to dive deep into their SEO experience. We want to understand the type of knowledge that they’ve gathered and how deep it is. The best thing here is to have them outline all the different projects they’ve worked on, in which capacity, and what was the results of the work they did.

After their experience checks out we want to test them by making them give us an SEO audit and suggest a few high-impact things that we could to do improve our organic traffic. This is one of the best things we can do to determine how knowledgeable they are.

A final point I like to add is to also focus on personality traits and make sure that you have a good communicator. SEO isn’t always properly understood inside companies yet SEO work is extremely high value.

That’s why it’s important to have plenty of calls and interviews to find out the type of person that is joining your company.
